Alto-Minho
Northernmost point of Portugal: the district of Viana do Castelo, Alto-Minho region.
Its name comes from the MINHO river that divides two countries, Portugal and Spain, with the oldest natural border in the world since 1143.
Region composed of 10 municipalities with around 250 thousand inhabitants spread over 2200km2:
– Arcos de Valdevez / Caminha / Melgaço / Monção / Paredes de Coura / Ponte da Barca / Ponte de Lima / Valença / Viana do Castelo / Vila Nova de Cerveira
With its agricultural and forest lands, its rivers and the Atlantic Ocean, it is a region dominated by nature, with the Peneda-Gerês National Park standing out in the municipalities of Arcos de Valdevez, Melgaço and Ponte da Barca.
Its villages with their architecture such as Castro Laboreiro (Melgaço), Covas (Vila Nova de Cerveira), Lindoso (Ponte da Barca), Sistelo (Arcos de Valdevez)…
Its culture with the Pilgrimage of São João d’Arga (Caminha) and the Pilgrimage of São Bartolomeu (Ponte da Barca).
